Can you watch the sunrise from Borobudur temple again?

Yes. The on-temple sunrise was paused from 2020 and came back as an official InJourney ticket in October 2025.

InJourney announced the relaunch in mid October 2025. Good News From Indonesia reported that the sunrise visit, paused since 2020, was back, starting at 04:00 through Gate 7 with visitors climbing onto the structure. Mojok added that sunrise is watched from the ninth level, the top of the monument, every day.

Two myths die here. The first is that the temple sunrise no longer exists. The second, older one is that you book it through the Manohara Hotel. The hotel-run package ended in 2020. The new product is an InJourney ticket. The name lingers because check-in is at the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center and breakfast is served at Manohara Restaurant.

It is a different morning from the classic postcard. From the top terrace you see Merapi and Merbabu to the east and the stupas around you. How does the official Borobudur Sunrise ticket work?

Check-in is at 04:00 at Gate 7, the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center. A guide leads the group up in the dark, and you watch the sun come up from the top terrace.

The official ticket page lists the start as 04:00 WIB every day and asks you to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for ticket checks. It warns that late arrivals may get limited access. The launch reports put check-in at the Borobudur unit office, entering by Gate 7 (Pintu 7).

Included, per the official page: a wristband ticket, a flashlight, upanat sandals, a professional guide and breakfast at Manohara Restaurant. The October 2025 launch reports named Bukit Dagi, a small hill inside the park, as the breakfast spot and added a souvenir. The official page is newer, so expect Manohara, and do not be surprised if it changes.

How did the temple sunrise go in 2026?

It kept running. About 80 people watched the first sunrise of 2026 from the top, and InJourney ran promotional rates during Chinese New Year and the school holidays.

On 1 January 2026 visitors gathered at the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center from 04:00, and InJourney reported about 80 people on top against a target of 50. Antara described the sun coming up orange over the eastern horizon, with Merbabu and Merapi appearing as it brightened. One visitor from Bandung called it "cool and calming".

Promotions followed. Good News From Indonesia reported a reduced sunrise and sunset rate for Chinese New Year, 14 to 17 February 2026. InJourney's school-holiday promotion ran from 20 June to 12 July 2026. Promotions come and go at short notice. If your dates fall on a holiday, check the official site before you book anything else.

What is the Borobudur Sunrise Pradaksina?

A quieter version of the sunrise ticket: a silent walk around the monument and a meditation session with a spiritual guide, starting at 04:00.

The Pradaksina product page describes a silent procession around the temple, then meditation as the light reaches the stupas. It is run with MyndfulAct, and the page lists the spiritual guides by name, Buddhist monks and a nun among them. The sunrise ticket and upanat are included, and the meeting point is the same Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center.

Pradaksina means walking clockwise around a sacred place, which is how Borobudur was built to be experienced, gallery by gallery. If you want the sunrise for the stillness rather than the photo, this is the one to look at. The page does not state its own daily cap, so ask when you book.

Is the Borobudur temple sunrise permanent?

Not officially. InJourney still calls it a trial, evaluated with the heritage office, Magelang regency and tour operators.

At the launch, InJourney said the program was in a trial phase (uji coba) and would be reviewed regularly. Mojok listed the partners in that review: the Ministry of Culture's museum and heritage office, the Magelang regency government, ASITA and other tourism operators. They are measuring physical impact on the stones, visitor perception and public feedback.

A year on, the official site still sells it daily. Trial status matters for one thing: it can be changed or paused. Book with free cancellation where you can, and read any "sunrise inside the temple" listing carefully if it was written before October 2025.

How do you book the Borobudur sunrise ticket?

Directly on ticket.injourneydestination.id, or through a tour that states it includes the temple sunrise. Either way you need a named booking.

The official route is the InJourney ticket site, also reachable from ticket.borobudurpark.com. InJourney also takes bookings by WhatsApp. Foreign visitors pay a higher tier than Indonesian residents with a KTP or KITAS. Booking yourself means getting to Gate 7 by about 03:30 on your own, which from Yogyakarta is a drive of 1 to 1.5 hours in the dark.
