VIP sunrise inside Borobudur

KOTA takes you through the gate before the public opens and up to the top three levels for first light among the bell stupas. Afterwards there's coffee or tea and a light breakfast with the temple in front of you.

VIP Sunrise Inside Borobudur with Breakfast

About this experience

This is the on-temple sunrise, not the hill. The listing promises entry during sunrise before public opening and access to the upper terraces, levels 7 to 9: the circular terraces with their 72 latticed stupas around the great central stupa. From up there you face east towards Merapi and Merbabu as the light comes. What you don't get is the postcard of the temple floating in mist. For that you have to stand on Setumbu Hill.

The early access runs on InJourney's sunrise program, relaunched in October 2025 after a pause since 2020 and still officially a trial. It takes 100 visitors a day, a cap the listing repeats. One thing to check: the inclusions quote the official VIP sunrise ticket without saying clearly whether your option covers it. Ask KOTA before you pay, and compare with the official sunrise ticket page.

The rest is straightforward. Pickup in Yogyakarta or Bantul, about an hour each way, roughly two hours at the temple with a licensed English-speaking guide, and no shopping stops. Longer options on the listing add Prambanan with a guide. Groups top out at 15, and KOTA says plainly that a clear sky isn't guaranteed.

What guests say

★★★★★

100% worth the early morning awakening.

Charlotte · France, Oct 2026
★★★★★

It is really worth getting up very early to admire the sunrise and the temple with fewer people.

Davide · Italy, Aug 2026
★★★★★

It was truly an exchange and a discussion, not just a boring recitation.

Myriam · France, Sep 2026

Tips before you book

  • Ask KOTA in writing whether the official sunrise ticket is in your option. Get the answer before you pay, not at the gate.
  • Tripods are banned, so bring a camera you can hold steady. The light changes fast between 05:00 and 06:00.
  • June to September brings the driest skies and the latest sunrise, around 05:45 to 05:53. More on that in our best-time guide.
  • Cover shoulders and knees, and bring sunscreen: the listing asks for it, and the top terrace has no shade once the sun is up.
  • Carry your passport or a copy. The sunrise slot is registered by name.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you watch the sunrise on KOTA's tour?

On the temple itself. The listing gives access to the upper terraces, levels 7 to 9, during sunrise and before public opening.

The listing is unclear. It mentions the official VIP sunrise ticket in the inclusions without saying whether your option covers it. Ask KOTA before booking and check the official sunrise ticket page.

How many people are on the temple at sunrise?

The official sunrise program takes 100 visitors a day, and KOTA's own groups stop at 15.

Can I add Prambanan?
