Borobudur's misty view from Setumbu Hill

This is the postcard: Borobudur small in the valley mist, Merapi and Merbabu behind, the sun coming up between them. You watch it from Setumbu Hill in a group of five at most, and add the temple itself if you want to climb.

Borobudur Sunrise on Setumbu Hill

About this experience

Punthuk Setumbu is a village viewpoint in the Menoreh hills, around 400 metres up, west of the temple. It turned into a sunrise spot after photographers shared shots of the temple floating above the fog. The listing aims to have you there for about 5:00 a.m., which leaves time to walk up from the car park before the sky lightens.

The temple isn't part of the base trip. Borobudur is an optional add-on, about 4 km from the hill by the listing's figure, with entry as the gates open; in practice the regular climbing sessions start at 08:30. Two more add-ons are worth a look: Mendut and Pawon, the small temples that sit on a straight line with Borobudur. The listing includes their entrance and the Setumbu fee, plus the Borobudur fee if you add it.

Jogja Borobudur Tour & Travel caps the group at five, and the listing names an English-speaking driver rather than a guide. Guests still mention guides at the temple. Mist isn't guaranteed. On a clear, still night it fills the valley; on a cloudy one you may see grey.

It was great that the process went smoothly. I was able to climb all the way to the top of Borobudur.

Tips before you book

  • Add the Borobudur option if you want to climb. Without it you see the temple from the hill only.
  • Bring a torch for the steps up the hill and a light layer for the wait at the top.
  • The hill gets crowded with tour groups at dawn. Stake out a spot at the front rail early.
  • Mist isn't promised. June to September gives the clearest volcano views; our best-time guide has the months.
  • If it rains, the steps get slippery and muddy. Wear shoes with grip.
